Simon Ballard was born in Warwickshire and whilst still at school played several concertos with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at Birmingham Town Hall. He continued his studies with the Austrian pianist Katharina Wolpe in London. Simon is well known as a concerto player, having over sixty concertos in his repertoire, and as a solo recitalist for the B.B.C. He has performed extensively throughout Britain and abroad including a performance of Saint Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in the Palm Gardens at Frankfurt, Germany, in the open air, and frequent performances of all Mozart’s 23 piano concertos.
In a varied musical career, Simon was also Head of Woodwind in the London Borough of Merton for eighteen years, and his teaching experience amounts to well over thirty years.
A prolific composer, he is a strong believer in tonality and melody, and the publisher June Emerson stocks many of his woodwind pieces He is also a festival adjudicator of long experience, including festivals at Hereford, Dudley, Northfield (Birmingham). Simon’s recordings include his own piano music and the complete solo piano works of Dvorak.
